USM Theology Lecture 2013

Every new Pope has to revisit the reforms that were outlined by the Second Vatican Council.

For some Catholics, John Paul II and Benedict XVI did not do enough to implement the changes envisioned by the Council’s architects: Catholics are not yet in Communion with other Christians, and, as Pope Francis has said “we don’t yet have a truly deep theology of women in the church.”

For others, Vatican II went too far.

Whatever your perspective, Vatican II is an important part of how Catholicism might develop in the 21st century.

A native of Italy, Massimo Faggioli earned his Ph.D. at the University of Turin. He is Assistant Professor of Theology at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minn.). He is the author of Vatican II: The Battle for Meaning, and True Reform: Liturgy and Ecclesiology in Sacrosanctum Concilium.
