(Leavenworth, Kan.)—Four University of Saint Mary Football players have been named to the 2013 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Pre-Season Team.
Spires wide receiver Jerrell Young, a senior out of Portland, Ore., made the team as a unanimous selection. He’s joined by offensive teammates Ronnie Cooper, a senior receiver out of Plano, Texas, and Alan Gudka, a junior offensive lineman from Keenseburg, Colo. On the defensive side of the ball, defensive back Eli Amador, a junior from New Waverly, Texas, represents USM.
“The four Spires football players earned the respect of the conference coaches last season enough to be named to the Pre-Season All-KCAC 1st Team,” said USM Head Football Coach Lance Hinson. “Coaches cannot vote for their own players for this team, so this is really quite an honor. As well as these young men represent USM on the field, they are just as honorable off the field.”
Hinson added that Young “had an outstanding season in 2012. He earned 1st Team All-KCAC, making 72 receptions for 971 yards and nine TDs in 10 games. Jerrell finished in the top 10 in the nation in almost every receiving category.
“Wide Receiver Ronnie Cooper had great season, with 76 catches for 929 yards and 12 TDs. Ronnie also finished in the top 10 nationally in most categories and was voted to the All-Conference 2nd Team.
“Defensive Back Eli Amador finished the 2012 3rd in the KCAC with 5 interceptions—good for seventh in the nation. This past spring, Eli’s teammates voted him as a captain for the 2013 season.
“Offensive Lineman Alan Gudka earned Honorable Mention All-KCAC in 2012 after another solid season as the Spires center. Alan is the anchor of the offensive line and, like Eli, his teammates voted him as a captain for the upcoming season.”
