(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The University of Saint Mary has named Rainey Whitworth head coach for the Spires Women’s Lacrosse Team.

Whitworth, a Savannah, Ga. native, comes to the University of Saint Mary from Southern Virginia University where she excelled as a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III player, starting every game as a midfielder for SVU Knights in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
She served as team captain from 2014-16—and led the Knights to their winningest season in 2016. Whitworth was also nominated for Second Team All-Conference Honors in 2016 after scoring a program-best 44 goals and dishing out eight assists. She led the team with 52 points, 90 shots, and 53 ground balls, and she controlled a team-best 56 draws, along with causing 23 turnovers in that same season.
Prior to her stint at SVU, Whitworth played one year at Savannah College of Art and Design—a powerhouse in National Association of Intercollegiate Atheletics (NAIA) women's lacrosse. Her team won the 2013 NAIA National Championship.
“Coach Whitworth is ready to lead our program to great heights,” said USM Athletic Director Rob Miller. “She understands the game and with her energy and vision, Lady Spires Lacrosse is only going to become a greater force in our conference.”
In addition to her experience as a player, Whitworth has worked as a high school summer lacrosse coach—helping train and condition players for competition.
