Artist’s Reception Set for 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21

(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The University of Saint Mary this fall presents Processing Styles, an exhibition by Kansas City artist Phil Shafer, featuring ceramic work by Lansing High School alum Miguel Rodriguez. The show opens on Sept. 21 and runs through Oct. 26 in USM’s Goppert Gallery on the Leavenworth campus, 4100 South 4th Street. An artist’s reception and talk by Shafer will be held beginning at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in Goppert Gallery.

During the month-long show, the gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission to the exhibit or reception is free.

Shafer earned his BFA from Kansas City Art Institute in 2000 and contributes his primarily computer-generated flat vector style to a wide variety of projects. Shaffer is a graphic designer for the University of Kansas Medical Center and is the owner and lead designer of Sike Designs and Sikenomics Clothing.

“This exhibit is a great opportunity for the community to experience some of the new trends in the contemporary art world,” said Susan Nelson, associate professor of art at USM.

“Phil will spend the week before the opening creating an exhibit specifically for our gallery space. In addition to reacting to the space, Phil will be installing Miguel Rodriquez’s ceramics with his 2-D works and imagery painted directly on the gallery wall,” Nelson said. “Shafer met Miguel Rodriquez at the Kansas City Art Institute and they have collaborated previously. Rodriquez is a graduate of Lansing High School.”
