9-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, Fort Leavenworth

(Leavenworth, Kan.)—University of Saint Mary Spires Women’s Basketball Team is hosting a free hoops clinic for the children ages of active-duty military service members from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Harney Sports Complex at Fort Leavenworth.

The clinic is for children ages 8-15. Available slots are limited. Send your child’s name and age to to RSVP. Call 913-684-7526 for more information.

Attendees will learn key lessons in basketball fundamentals from Spires coaching staff and USM players. Students participating in the clinic will also receive a free ticket to the USM Spires Women’s Basketball home game vs. Bethel College at 5 p.m. that night.

“We wanted to do something for the military families that sacrifice so much for us,” said USM Head Women’s Basketball Coach Mike Basler. “Through my time in the community, I know there are a lot of military families that don’t always get to do things in the community because they move so often. We thought it would be great to go up there for a day and just give back.

“It’s great for our players, too. When you’re a college athlete you need to realize you’re fortunate, and you need to give back and try to be somebody’s hero.”

Clinic participants should wear a t-shirt, shorts, and basketball shoes, and bring a water bottle to the event.
Saint Mary has 12 varsity sports programs—football, volleyball, baseball, softball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, cross country, and track & field—along with co-ed cheerleading and dance. Visit to learn more about USM athletics.
