Freshman Guard Grant Greenberg of Leavenworth Honored by KCAC
(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) has named University of Saint Mary Men’s Basketball player Grant Greenberg, of Leavenworth, Kan., as KCAC Player of the Week—the third time this season that Greenberg has earned the honor.
Greenberg, a 6’2” freshman guard, earned the award for his performance over three USM games last week. During that span, Greenberg scored 89 points on 20 of 43 shooting, including going 7 for 10 on three-pointers, and 42 for 43 from the free throw line. He also recorded 12 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks, and seven steals.
Saint Mary went 2-1 over the stretch, including two conference wins—79-76 over Southwestern College and 93-80 over McPherson College. USM’s lone loss came against non-conference opponent Ozarks College.
Overall on the season, Greenberg ranks second in conference and second in NAIA Division II in points per game with 28.22; first in conference and eighth in NAIA Division II in scoring with 254 points; sixth in conference in field goal percentage at 50.4 percent; first in conference and seventh in NAIA Division II in free throw percentage at 91.9 percent; and second in conference in steals with 1.78 per game.
Earlier this season, Greenberg earned back-to-back KCAC Player of the Week Awards in Weeks 2 and 3.
USM Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jon Bishop praised Greenberg’s efforts on the season.
“Grant had another amazing week for us this past week. He was a huge reason we went 2-1 on the week and are sitting at 2-0 in conference and in first place,” Coach Bishop said. “His ability to score in so many ways has made him really hard to stop. Teams are struggling to take away everything he can do because he can do so many different things to hurt you.”
“I’ve had so many people ask me how he’s doing it. It’s simply this: He’s a talented kid that works harder than anyone else. No other reasons besides those two. He’s worked every day since this summer and hasn’t stopped since. Hard work pays off and he’s a perfect example of that.”
The USM Men’s Basketball Team is currently 2-0 in the KCAC and 6-3 overall. The Spires next go on the road to take on Friends University at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12.
Saint Mary has 12 varsity sports programs—football, volleyball, baseball, softball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, cross country, and track & field—along with co-ed cheerleading and dance. Visit www.gospires.com to learn more about USM athletics.
