(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The University of Saint Mary has named Matt Sonnichsen—whose coaching resume includes stops at multiple NCAA Division I schools—as the new head coach of the Spires Volleyball Team.

Coach Sonnichsen is returning to the coaching world at Saint Mary following time spent as a director of volleyball for NCSA Athletic Recruiting. He most recently served as as head coach at Louisiana Tech University, where he led the team to its highest two-year win total in years. His prior coaching experience includes head coaching jobs at the University of Iowa, University of Tulsa, and Newberry College, as well as assistant coaching positions at the University of California-Santa Barbara and Clemson University.

As a player, Coach Sonnichsen won two NCAA Championships at UCLA, where he was named an All-American three times. He also played for the USA Men’s National Team.

Coach Sonnichsen said he has big expectations for the Spires Volleyball Team.

“Joining the program, we want to keep developing the overall talent level,” he said. “I have very high goals for the team, but understand that it's a process to get there.”

USM Athletic Director Rob Miller said “Matt brings a wealth of knowledge and insight into college volleyball to our program. His experience will help continue the efforts to improve our program’s success both on and off of the court. We are very pleased to have Coach Sonnichsen at the helm.”

Coach Sonnichsen succeeds Sarah Johnson, who coached the volleyball team for two seasons.

Saint Mary has 12 varsity sports programs—football, volleyball, baseball, softball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, cross country, and track & field—along with co-ed cheerleading and dance. Visit to learn more about USM athletics.
