Registration 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 15

(Leavenworth, Kan.)—With summer just a few short weeks away, the University of Saint Mary is again prepared to dive into its popular American Red Cross Summer Swim Program. Registration will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, in the Mead Hall Walnut Room on the USM main Leavenworth campus, 4100 South 4th Street.

The cost is $40 per session. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis, and classes historically fill up quickly.

The USM program offers Levels 1 through 6 of the Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program for children ages 4 and up, combining the best in swim instruction with a strong emphasis on drowning prevention and water safety.

Lessons are held at USM’s heated indoor pool, located on the ground level of Berchmans Hall on the Leavenworth campus. Most classes meet for 45 minutes. Daytime lessons meet Monday through Thursday for two consecutive weeks, and evening classes meet two times per week for four weeks.

This year, USM is offering session start dates in May, June, and July.

The first session for daytime and evening lessons begins on Tuesday, May 28. Classes are limited to six participants per class. “Classes are kept small so that swimmers can receive individual attention, and because smaller classes create a safer environment,” said USM Aquatics Director Janet Loewenstein.

USM also offers ongoing morning and evening aqua-fitness classes for adults, designed to benefit all fitness levels, with exercises that can be modified to meet specific needs. A hydraulic chair lift is available for those who have difficulty with ladders. Participants can expect improvement in strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness from this non-impact workout. No swimming skills are required.

Aqua-fitness classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m., or on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.
