(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The University of Saint Mary Spires Softball Team has been honored for the team’s strong academic performance during the 2011-2012 season, earning second place on one of the Top Ten All-Academic Team ranking lists issued by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

USM appeared on the NFCA’s dedicated list for National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) schools. The Saint Mary team GPA of 3.549 was good for second place on the list, and just a few hundredths of a point away from the top spot.

The NFCA Academic Awards program honors both collegiate and high school teams for their submitted GPAs from the 2011-2012 academic year. Saint Mary was the only school in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Association (KCAC) to make the list.

“I’m proud of the team. We’re second in the nation, and we’ve never been this high on the list before,” said Lori Lorenzen, head coach of USM’s Softball Team. “I had a really great group of kids last year that worked very hard in the classroom to achieve this honor.

“As I tell them, they’re going to be doing their careers for the rest of their lives, so they need to excel at their studies because that’s their future.”

Saint Mary has 12 varsity sports programs—football, volleyball, baseball, softball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, cross country, and track & field—along with co-ed cheerleading and dance. Visit to learn more about USM athletics.
