(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The University of Saint Mary welcomes, “The Rashel’s Immigration & Community Engagement Exhibition,” featuring the works of Bangladeshian social justice advocates Jabed Rashel and Tajreen Shupti in the university’s Goppert Gallery, on USM’s Leavenworth campus, 4100 South 4th Street.

The opening reception will be from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, in the Goppert Gallery. The event is free and open to the public. The show will be on display weekdays through Oct. 6 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Rashel’s work freezes the despicable persecution and suffering the Rohingyas, a minority Muslim group in Myanmar, are experiencing in their home country. While the government burns their villages in hopes of making Myanmar a Buddhist state, the Rohingyas are being forced to flee—sailing across the Naf River to Bangladesh with the hope of shelter and freedom. There, the Rohingyas are being turned away, and a humanitarian crisis is growing by the day. Tens of thousands of men, women, and children are stranded—hungry, homeless, and becoming hopeless.

Rashel had this to say about the unrest in Myanmar and the light he hopes to shed on the situation, “The media is not even saying a single word about their rights because they are most neglected and ignored people in the world. In my drawings, I try to depict the suffering the Rohingyas are going through every day to just stay alive.”

Similarly, Shupti (wife of Rashel) paints an all-too-real picture of religious intolerance across the world. She explains her featured painting “Untitled” like this: “I tried to capture the confusion, the fear, the anxiety, the unease, the hesitation, and all the other indescribable feeling that a large group of people are going through in the present world.”

The Rashel’s Immigration & Community Engagement Exhibition will play into a campus-wide interdisciplinary focus on social justice, immigration, and human rights. Events centering on on these topics will take place throughout the month of September.
