(Leavenworth, Kan.)— Lifeguarding classes are being offered by the American Red Cross and the University of Saint Mary starting on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Berchmans Hall indoor heated pool (USM main campus at 4100 South 4th Street in Leavenworth). Classes run for 10 weeks from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. The deadline for enrollment is Aug. 18.
Lifeguarding candidates must be at least 15 years old by Dec.1, 2014 and must pass a prerequisite test that includes a 300-yard continuous swim.
The comprehensive training program will teach lifeguards the skills needed to prepare for and respond appropriately to drowning victims. It also teaches the skills to prevent injuries, respond to injuries and breathing or cardiac emergencies, as well as first aid and professional rescuer CPR/AED training.
Lifeguarding is one of many courses in USM’s College for High School Program. Students can earn both high school and college credit for the same course, or can enroll in a non-credit course.
USM also offers Red Cross swim lessons for children ages 4 and up, with evening classes held every Tuesday and Thursday beginning Aug. 26 for four weeks. The cost is $40 per session. Go to www.stmary.edu/aquatics for more info.
The university also offers ongoing morning and evening aqua-fitness classes for adults. Classes are designed to benefit all fitness levels, with exercises that can be modified to meet specific needs. A hydraulic chair lift is available for those who have difficulty with ladders. No swimming skills are required.
The cost is $45 for a six-week session.
