Athletic Training Student Handbook

Your degree extends beyond the classroom. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, you will complete clinical internships that provide opportunities to practice the profession firsthand. Clinical experiences range in settings from collegiate athletics to physician offices to professional sports and more. The focus of clinical education is to develop independence for patient care and progresses your knowledge and skills to entry-level for successful transition into the athletic training profession.

The goal of USM's Academic Resource Center (ARC) is to aid students of all abilities in becoming more effective learners. The ARC helps improve performance in critical academic areas of reading, writing, math, and study skills. Aid comes in many forms, including:


  • providing tutoring in specific subject areas such as math, science, history, and English

  • serving as a writing center, where students can get one-on-one assistance

  • providing valuable tips about studying more effectively

  • meeting the needs of students entitled to accommodations

  • providing computers and other forms of technology

De Paul Library Resources

USM's De Paul Library is home to thousands of resources to help you excel, study, and research. As an athletic training student, you have open access to some of the most-used databases to search for the most current and evidence-based journals, including:

  • The American Journal of Sports Medicine (official publication of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine)

  • JOSPT (acroynm stands for Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy; the official journal of the American Physical Therapy Association's Orthopaedic Section and Sports Physical Therapy Section)
