How do I order my graduation cap and gown?

Cap and gowns, graduation announcements, and more can be ordered online through USM's graduation partner, CB Announcements.

How can I pick up my cap and gown?

All cap and gown orders will be mailed to an address you provide. When you order your cap and gown, be sure to include the address where you would like the cap and gown to arrive.

Undergraduate hoods will be sent to the university and will be awarded to you at the Convocation & Hooding Ceremony in April.

If an undergraduate cannot attend the Convocation & Hooding Ceremony, your hood will be given to you before Commencement.

Graduate hoods will be shipped to your address of record. Master's and doctorate graduates will carry their hoods during the Commencement procession, where they will be hooded at Commencement.


When is the deadline to complete the graduation participation form?

All graduates who intend to participate in graduation must complete the participation registration online form by Friday, March 31.

What if I’m late and miss the deadline to order my cap and gown?

You must purchase regalia in order to participate in Convocation and Commencement ceremonies.

If you miss the April 17 deadline but still wish to participate at Commencement, CB Announcements will work with you to ensure that your late order will still arrive in time.  However, a late fee of $50 or more will be assessed — in addition to the cost of the cap and gown.


How soon should I order my graduation announcements?

Most graduation announcements are ordered and mailed four to six weeks prior to graduation.

How do I order brunch tickets?

Brunch tickets must be purchased online. The deadline to order tickets is Friday, April 28. Tickets are non-refundable.

How will I pick up my brunch tickets?

All brunch tickets must be pre-ordered online.

When you place your order, you will not receive a physical ticket. You will receive a receipt via email, which you may bring with you as proof of purchase.

Your party's name will be added to a paid admission list, which will allow you into the event when the doors open to Saint Joseph Dining Hall at 11 a.m..


What’s the menu for brunch?

  • Carved ham

  • Variety of mini quiche

  • Southwestern scramble/ Tortillas

  • Regular scrambled eggs

  • French toast

  • Hash brown potatoes

  • Biscuits with country gravy

  • Sausage links

  • Fresh cut fruit

  • Assorted mini Danish & mini muffins

  • Coffee, water, orange juice


Will the university Spirit Shop be open before and after graduation activities?

The Spirit Shop will be open at 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the day of Commencement, Saturday, May 13.


When is Commencement Rehearsal?

Commencement rehearsal is at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, inside McGilley Field House.

Rehearsal is required for all participating graduates.


When is the Convocation & Hooding Ceremony?

The Convocation & Hooding Ceremony is at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, inside Annunciation Chapel.

Rehearsal for Convocation & Hooding is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday, May 1. Undergraduate seniors will meet in Berchmans first floor and process to Annunciation.

*NOTE: the Convocation & Hooding Ceremony is for undergraduates only. Master's and Doctoral students are hooded at Commencement.

Cap and gown attire is required for the ceremony (not for rehearsal).


Are tickets required for my family and friends for the Commencement ceremony?

There are no tickets required for Commencement, but seating is limited in McGilley Field House.

We encourage you to arrive early (the doors open at 11:30).


Is there a limit to how many people I can bring?

There are no limits to how many guests graduates may bring.


Do I have to wear my cap and gown to all USM’s Commencement activities?

Cap and gowns are required for every Commencement activity.

Bachelor’s degree candidates must wear Cap and Gown for:

  • Commencement & Hooding Ceremony (this is where Bachelor's degree candidates will be hooded).

Bachelor’s degree candidates must wear Cap, Gown and Hood for:

  • Baccalaureate Mass

  • Commencement Ceremony. Master’s degree and Doctorate candidates should wear their cap and gown to Mass and carry their hood during the Commencement Ceremony. Master’s and Doctorate candidates will be hooded during Commencement.

Master’s degree and Doctorate candidates must wear Cap and Gown to Mass and carry their hood during the Commencement ceremony:

How do I wear my tassel?

  • Bachelor’s degree candidates should wear their tassels on the right side during the Convocation & Hooding Ceremony.

  • All degree candidates (bachelor’s, master’s degree, and doctorate) should wear their tassels on the left during Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement.


What kind of shoes are best during Commencement?

We recommend that you wear comfortable shoes (no flip flops, please).

Graduates will process across campus from Saint Mary Hall to McGilley Field House, nearly half the campus.


When will I receive my actual diploma?

You will pick up your diploma on the first floor of Berchmans Hall immediately following Commencement.

Please check eSpire before May 13 to ensure there are no holds on your account that would prevent you receiving your diploma.

Diplomas will be mailed to summer grads after degree requirements have been confirmed.
