Dr. Scott O'Leary
As a professor in philosophy, Dr. Scott O’Leary works with students to gain an appreciation of fundamental problems in life, including human existence, knowledge, values, and reason. He joined the faculty at USM in 2010, and has impressive collegiate credentials.
Dr. O’Leary graduated from Boston College in 2005 with a degree in history and philosophy. He received his master of arts and doctorate in philosophy from Fordham University in 2011. His dissertation focused on the ethical importance of emotions and emotional experience, drawing on research in evolutionary, developmental, and moral psychology as well as neuroscience and contemporary philosophical ethics. His philosophical interests are mainly in contemporary ethical theory and medical ethics. He is also interested in political philosophy and virtue epistemology, specifically the role emotions play concerning the value of knowledge and in philosophical conceptions of wisdom.
