Susan Nelson
Associate Professor of Art
M.F.A. University of Kansas
B.F.A University of Kansas

Susan Nelson completed her MFA at the University of Kansas, and began teaching at the University of Saint Mary in 1992.

Prof. Nelson is the past recipient of multiple grants from the Kansas Arts Commission. She’s an accomplished sculptor who currently works exclusively with clay. At Saint Mary, she primarily teaches hand building of clay.

Will exhibit over 50 recent works at the Collison Gallery in Weston, MO through Oct. 31.

Clay is extremely versatile in that it remains malleable in the forming process and submits to a subtractive, additive, or modeling process seamlessly.  In addition, the complex glazing and firing process provides ample opportunity for problem solving and research.  The possibilities inherent in the material are, in fact, limitless.

The study of the history of art has been a tremendous influence on both the forms and glazes of the pieces I create.  The intensive study of Chinese, Japanese, Native American, Pre-Columbian Peruvian, and Minoan pottery has nourished the growth in my work.

I enjoy creating objects of beauty which function within living spaces and enhance daily life.
