Before children hit kindergarten, preschool is an important step in the social and intellectual development of the child. Before the 1970s, few parents sent their children to preschool centers. Now, almost every child in the United States attends a preschool before heading to kindergarten. USM’s Bachelor of Science in Child Development Education program is designed to train and develop future preschool teachers so they can pass their knowledge on to “little ones.”

As a Child Development Education major, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge necessary to immediately enter a competitive, rewarding career in preschools, childcare centers and related areas. USM’s Child Development Education explores how children learn and develop, and prepares graduates to work with children ages infancy through middle school age. With so many child care facilities and preschools in the area, internship that often lead to future employment are easy to snag. The Child Development Education program prepares students for professional graduate school programs as well, such as psychology, sociology, adult education, and even nursing.

Careers in Child Development:
• Preschool teacher
• Childcare supervisor
• Preschool center director
