Chemistry
As a chemistry major, you will study the building blocks of the world while laying the foundation of your career. USM's chemistry program covers the fundamentals of theoretical and experimental chemistry, and it provides hands-on experience with analysis, synthesis, and extensive lab work. And, you can explore the specific type of chemistry you want to learn through a variety of elective classes.
The program can lead to many different rewarding careers such as:
- pharmacist
- forensic scientist
- lab technician
- research technician
- doctor
- dentist
- veterinarian
- patent lawyer
Our chemistry classes are taught by highly-qualified faculty, not graduate assistants. USM's small class sizes allow one-on-one instruction from professors and access to your instructors.
Additional benefits include independent research opportunities, laboratory work-study opportunities for qualified students, a chance to "shine" and earn meaningful reference letters, and pre-professional exam and application preparation assistance.
If you're not interested in post-graduate work, our chemistry program is well-suited for students who plan careers in business, secondary education, technical support, or other areas related to the sciences.
Plus, USM's Chemistry program is an excellent resume builder for medical school or graduate school. As of 2005, more than 90 percent of USM chemistry graduates gain acceptance to nationally accredited medical schools.
