| A board-certified clinical laboratory scientist is an essential member of the health professional team. Clinical laboratory technologists run the diagnostic tests that provide information for clinicians treating patients. Clinical laboratory science majors at USM take biology and chemistry-heavy courses. Emphasis is placed on performing medical testing and evaluating those tests. The clinical laboratory science program prepares USM graduates to gain acceptance to an accredited School of Clinical Laboratory Science for a required internship year. To practice, clinical laboratory science students must also pass a national certifying examination.
Recent USM clinical laboratory science graduates work in a variety of scientific related fields. Many work in hospital laboratories, physicians' offices, armed forces, and blood banks. Many continue their education through professional graduate study while others make the jump to medical school. Recent USM graduates have also combined clinical laboratory science with biology and/or chemistry to maximize career marketability.
