USM's history program program is a true community--a collection of professors and students who act like parts of a larger extended family.
Through small classes with extensive individual attention, history students acquire essential analytical and research skills to understand, identify, and evaluate historical developments, movements, and trends. They also learn how to interpret and critique primary and secondary sources, being able to construct well-developed arguments based on historical evidence.
Using an interdisciplinary approach, students recognize and understand human societies from different perspectives, in order to develop a mature view of human nature, an informed perspective of themselves, and a connection with the wider global community. And USM history majors can tailor the program to their interests: study Asian nations, ancient history, American history-it's up to you!
Classroom activities are thought-provoking, but also fun and interactive. Outside the classroom, professors and students interact by taking field trips to various local museums and International Relations Council events, and participate in Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society conferences. They attend International Studies Association conferences. They help organize the annual Lincoln Douglas Debate, Lincoln Lecture, and Global Human Rights Conference. USM History students are also actively involved in service learning projects, with community partners such as the Lansing Historical Museum.
In recent years, USM History majors have participated in department-sponsored trips to Washington, D.C., New York City, Russia, Japan, Canada, and Peru. Many of our students also take advantage of semester-long study abroad opportunities, and some have become Fulbright Scholars.
