Some people are called to help others. Those that are may choose to become Pastoral Ministry majors. As a Pastoral Ministry major at the University of Saint Mary, you’ll learn to experience the wonders of human experience, while being prepared to become active lay ministers in the community at large. While the Catholic tradition is USM’s focus, the Pastoral Ministry program challenges your own thinking so you can better understand the importance of individuality. Students are encouraged to recognize and accept the importance of faith unilaterally, in both private and public sectors. Many graduates jump into the career as lay ministers or counselors, while many others continue their education through graduate studies. Recent USM graduates have served in a variety of fields, including college ministry directors, seminary administrators, professors, and school teachers.
In addition to the required courses, students in the Pastoral Ministry program complete regular activities that nurture spiritual, personal and communal formation for ministry. Recent student-led Pastoral Ministry activities include weekend spiritual retreats, high school spiritual counseling, and mission trips to foreign countries, such as El Salvador and Guatemala.

USM’s Pastoral Ministry program focuses on the formation of laity for full time work in the Church. Taught out of the Catholic heritage, it is open to students from other Christian traditions.
“USM’s Pastoral Ministry program is student-centered, freeing students to think, critically and express themselves freely.”
Brian Hughes,
Professor Pastoral Ministry
