Students in Carlton Philpot's "Principles of Management" class collected more than 300 items for a food drive that was part of a service-learning project in March, 2009. The food was donated to the Leavenworth Assistance Center.
Two students, sophomore Nicole Hilkemeyer and freshman Loyd Miller, led the efforts.
"They did a great job. This really fits the definition of service-learning," Philpot said.

Since 2004 the University of Saint Mary has participated in an annual Into the Streets project! Before the start of this school year over 100 freshmen and transfer students from the University of Saint Mary spent the morning in service to their community! This year’s, Into the Streets 2008, marked the sixth year new students of USM quickly immersed themselves into the community of Leavenworth. Students, in teams of six to ten, made a difference for more than 10 area agencies. While learning about services offered in Leavenworth County students learned how to help/connect with the agencies later on. Each team was also assigned an older university student who helped provide direction for each team. The Service Learning Office Wants to give a BIG thanks to all of those that participated and made this Service Learning event another Success!!!!
