SPANISH COURSES
SPA 111/112
ELEMENTARY SPANISH I AND II (FL)   (4 hours)
The first course serves as an introduction to the Spanish language. It is designed to build a foundation in vocabulary and grammar and in reading and listening comprehension. The second course builds upon the skills learned in the first semester, with additional emphasis on conversation and reading comprehension.

SPA 211/212
SPANISH III AND IV (FL)   (3 hours)
The first course is a review of grammar and vocabulary, practice in reading and writing Spanish, and increased conversational ability. Emphasis is on the development of composition skills, effectiveness of expression, basic forms of writing, and methods of description. The second course continues the development of conversation and writing skills, including those useful for career enhancement. Cultural and literary readings are also emphasized.

SPA 325 SPANISH CONVERSATION (FL)   (3 hours)
Dialogues and discussion for developing facility and ease in expression of ideas and issues. Prerequisite: SPA 211 or equivalent.

HISPANIC CIVILIZATION AND CULTURE   (3 hours)

An intensive focus on Spanish and Latin American civilization, viewed from a cultural perspective. Designed for students interested in history, the Spanish language, culture, and advanced literary study. Prerequisite: SPA 325 or consent of instructor.

SPA 448/449 SURVEY OF SPANISH AND SPANISH AMERICAN LITERATURE I AND II (FL)   (3 hours)
A study of the development of Spanish and Spanish American literature from the Poema de Mio Cid to the present day. Prerequisite: SPA 212 or consent of instructor.

FRENCH CONVERSATION (FL)   (3 hours)

Practice in speaking and understanding spoken French through discussions and oral drills designed to encourage students to communicate with ease and to use the language effectively. Prerequisite: FR 211 or consent of instructor.

FR 336 FRENCH CIVILIZATION AND CULTURE   (3 hours)
A study of French life and culture, including history, geography, and development as a nation, as well as key figures and their contributions to French life. Prerequisite: FR 325 or consent of instructor.

FR 448/449 SURVEY OF FRENCH LITERATURE I AND II (FL)   (3 hours)
Reading, discussion, and analysis of representative works from each major period in French literature, Middle Ages to the present. Prerequisite: FR 212 or consent of instructor.

FR 450 FRENCH THEATER THROUGH THE AGES (FL)   (3 hours)
A study of the development of French theater from its beginnings in the early Church to the present.

CLASSICAL STUDIES COURSES
LA 111/112 ELEMENTARY LATIN I AND II (FL)   (2-4 hours)
An introduction to the Latin language and Roman culture. Comparative study of Latin and English grammar and syntax. Vocabulary enrichment through knowledge of Latin roots. Selected readings in Latin.

CL 201 WORD POWER THROUGH LATIN AND GREEK   (1-2 hours)
A systematic approach to vocabulary-building based on Latin and Greek elements. Emphasis will be on general academic vocabulary, with some attention to common Latin phrases and medical and legal terms. Knowledge of Latin or Greek is not required.

EN 362 CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY      (3 hours)
Study of the major gods, heroes, mortals, and monsters of Greek and Roman mythology. Emphasis is on those myths and stories that have especially influenced western literature, thought, and the arts. The course includes reading of selected classical texts.

CL 390 SPECIAL TOPICS   (1-3 hours)
Study of a particular theme or topic of classical civilization/culture, with attention to classical texts in translation. Knowledge of Greek or Latin is not required. Course may be repeated for credit with different topic.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE COURSES
ESL 103 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE REVIEW I   (3 hours)
Review of fundamentals of oral and written English for the international student. Emphasis on increase of vocabulary, improvement of pronunciation, grammar, common idioms, reading of simple stories, conversation.

ESL 201 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - INTERMEDIATE I   (3 hours)
Intensive study and practice to develop language skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing, for students whose native language is other than English. The course is intended to prepare international students for successful college-level work.

ESL 202

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - INTERMEDIATE II   (3 hours)

Continuation of ESL 201. Encourages logical, concise, and clear expression of ideas.
