Pastoral Ministry Certification

What is a certificate of ministry program?
The certificate of ministry program prepares you for church-related work through the completion of five courses in USM’s theology and pastoral ministry paths.

Who would benefit from the certificate of ministry program?

  • If you’re interested in pursuing church ministry, the program will test your ministry aptitude and skills.
  • If you’re presently serving at some level of the ministry, the program will strengthen your theological background.
  • If you’re an actively involved church member, the program can refresh your theological grounding and help you engage others in a reflective environment.

What are the requirements?

  • Complete the University of Saint Mary admissions process[ link to apply now ]
  • Participate in an interview with the theology and pastoral ministry faculty
  • Provide letters of recommendation
  • Choose courses that are convenient for you, based on availability
  • Maintain a grade of C or better in each course.

What are the required courses?
Required courses total 15 credit hours, and you must take a minimum of 12 credit hours at the University of Saint Mary.

You can take the following five courses in any sequence:

  • Theology of Lay Ministry (TH 380)
  • A course in Bible study (TH 110, TH 250 or TH 260)
  • A doctrine course (TH 125, TH 320, TH 322, or TH 325)
  • A Christian ethics course (TH 230, TH 235, TH 340, or TH 428)
  • A ministry skills course (PM 320 or PM 450)
