The safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff is a top priority at the University of Saint Mary. We are committed to ensuring the safety of our students, employees, and visitors with effective policies and procedures, educational programming, and community involvement.

Though we’ve been blessed with a wonderfully safe campus and local community, we realize we can’t isolate ourselves from the world and its dangers.

Prevention Tactics
  • An all-campus emergency alert system
  • 24/7 security—trained public safety officers make regular campus patrols
  • Security cameras in the dorms
  • An average 5-minute response time from Leavenworth/Lansing police and fire departments
  • Thorough training on campus safety, security, and emergency procedures during new student orientation
  • A full-time campus counselor
  • An Emergency Management Team and Emergency Management Plan
  • Regular workshops on sexual assault and domestic violence prevention, self-defense strategies for women, safe dating, binge drinking, stress management, and more

Clery Act Compliance

In accordance with the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, also known as the Jeanne Clery Act, USM Public Safety works closely with the Student Life Office, the Leavenworth Police Department, and other agencies to provide annual campus crime statistics to students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

Kansas Sex Offender Registry

The federal Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act, enacted on October 28, 2000, went into effect October 28, 2002. The law requires institutions of higher education to issue a statement advising the campus community where law enforcement agency information provided by a state concerning registered sex offenders may be obtained. It also requires sex offenders already required to register in a state to provide notice, as required under State law, of each institution of higher education in that State at which the person is employed, carries on a vocation, volunteers services or is a student.

Winter Weather Policy

The faculty and administration at the University of Saint Mary value class time and do not want to close campus without warrant.

If the University of Saint Mary closes or has a late start time due to inclement weather, the message will appear in several places no later than 5 a.m.:

  • Textcaster Text Alerts
(This is the PRIMARY and PREFERRED method of emergency communications)
  • USM Email
  • Television/Radio

All faculty, staff, and students are responsible to either check for a Textcaster alert or read their USM email.
