Assistant
Director of the Academic Resource Center
(ARC)
Job Summary:
Establishes positive rapport among USM
community members and utilizes the ARC
as a vehicle for providing guidance,
support, encouragement and assistance
to students as well as faculty and staff.
Essential Functions:
• Conducts writing lab in conjunction
with freshman composition for students
under-prepared for the demands of college
• Provides
individuals and small groups of students,
particularly those on probation,
with tutoring and strategies for
improving reading comprehension, writing skills, and math fundamentals
• Interviews
probationary students at the beginning of each semester
to acquire
information for IEPs
• Documents,
on a weekly basis, probationary students’ progress
toward meeting established goals
• Refers
students making inadequate progress
to the director for counseling
• Secures and administers
examinations
• Monitors attendance
and contacts students regarding unexcused
absences
• Collaborates
with director and other staff to develop
and present requested
workshops/training
• Participates in administering
special projects assigned to the ARC
•
Supervises desk workers and tutors
in the absence of the director
• Monitors behavior
of students using the ARC and redirects
as necessary, e.g.,
availability and appropriate use of computers,
language, noise level, etc.
• Provides input for end of
semester/year reports
• Performs other duties
as assigned
Education, Experience and Minimum Required
Skills:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree,
Master’s degree preferred
• Minimum of three years’ experience
working with adults, e.g., instructing,
counseling, teaching, etc.
• Ability to work with remedial students
