The RN to BSN degree-completion program is designed specifically for the registered nurse seeking to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN). There is a growing need for baccalaureate-prepared nurses in the 21st century. USM's experienced, expert nursing professors teach the latest concepts and methods to help you succeed as a leader and in the field of nursing.

Full time students can complete the BSN in less than two years and approximately three years part time.

Admission Requirements

Conditional Acceptance:

Applicants will be conditionally accepted upon completion of the items below. Conditionally accepted students can enroll in classes for two terms. To receive financial aid, students must be fully accepted (see Full Acceptance)

Completion and payment of the admission application ($25 application non-refundable). Click the Admission and Program Requirementsto see application deadlines.

Copy of RN License (current RN licensure in the United States).


Full Acceptance:

All official transcripts.

Submission of two letters of recommendations from people who can attest to your professional and academic performance. At least one reference needs to be from a previous professor.

Personal statement of goals.


Cumulative GPA: Minimum of 2.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale on all previous college work. RN applicants who have a cumulative GPA between 2.0 and 2.5 may be considered for admission if they have a GPA of at least 2.5 on all pre-requisite nursing support courses.


Program/Graduation Requirements

Completion of all the University of Saint Mary's liberal studies and general education requirements for the bachelor's degree (128 credit hours).

Minimum grade of “C” in each nursing course is required for the nursing major. Grade of “D” is not acceptable and the course must be repeated.

Students who are taking nursing courses may be allowed to repeat a course one time. Students will be dismissed after failing the same nursing course twice. A student who earns a “D” or “F” in a second nursing course will be dismissed from the program.

Clinical Practice: Two courses in the BSN program require clinical hours. The Clinical pre-requisites requirements are completion of a background check and current physical exam. A student who is unsafe in clinical fails the course and will be reviewed by the Nursing Department Admission and Progression Committee. No student may move to another clinical nursing level until the current one is satisfactorily completed. For more information about clinical requirements, please contact us.

Completion of background check is required before clinical practice begins.

Completion of a health history, current physical exam and proof of current immunizations including annual TB skin test results are required before clinical practice begins.

Prior to enrollment in junior level nursing courses, RN applicants must present a minimum of 75 credit hours of acceptable college work from an accredited college with a minimum grade of “C” in each course. Students who do not meet the transfer credit minimum can be admitted and will be advised on an individual basis.
