The University of Saint Mary is incorporating text messaging and email into the university’s emergency communications in our efforts to better serve our students and Saint Mary parents.
The system will be used for life-threatening emergencies occurring on campus and in the surrounding community which may threaten the campus environment. This includes, but is not limited to, severe weather, shootings, chemical spills, and evacuation directions or large fires.
The system will also be used to disseminate university information such as winter-weather-related closings or delayed opening. It may also be used to notify university employees and students of special unforeseen circumstances that are localized to one or more buildings.
No one is required to opt-in to the text and email messaging service, however, students—for their own safety—are highly encouraged to opt in. Parents may also opt in. When you no longer want to receive the messages, you can unsubscribe at the same site.
Because costs for text messaging are incurred by the recipient, the university will limit the messages to those fitting the above criteria. Only a handful of USM offices are authorized to send messages via text for emergency purposes.
Other offices, including USM athletics and student life, offer additional messaging services on an opt-in basis. These services may include reminders on bill pay and class registration deadlines, updates on USM sports teams, and student life event reminders.
