Leticia Ochoa  '12 History and Political Science

Hey guys, I’m Leticia Ochoa. I know that my first name isn’t easy to pronounce, but it’s not that hard. As for my last name that’s a whole different thing. My friends just call me Letty for short. My ethnic background is Mexican, and I was born in Texas. English is my second language; in my household I just speak Spanish. I am a very outgoing person and I am always willing to work with others. I am also a very peaceful girl.

Bio Info:
Hometown: Donna, Texas

High School: Donna High School

Possible Major: History and Political Science

Favorite Class:
Global Context of Conflict, Peace Building, and Sexuality & Nationalism. Ha ha! I know this might sound boring but they are interesting courses that I found very beneficial for life. I personally love history and I believe that we are the ones who are shaping history for the future generations. Not long ago, the World Trade Center was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001 and I still remember what exactly happen that day.

Favorite Instructor:
My favorite professor is Natalie Riegg—or for those who know her, Nata. She is an awesome professor who makes classes very interesting for students. We also have something in common: English is our second language. She is also my advisor.

Clubs/Activities:
Multicultural Club: Latinos, Student Government Association, Residence Hall Association, and Campus Ministry.

Favorite Music:
I enjoy listening to a lot of different music, but I personally like Spanish music, like Tejano. My favorite musician of all times is Selena. Even though she is no longer with us, her music is deep inside our hearts. Even when I’m far way from home, when I listen to Spanish music it feels as if I’m close by to my family members.

Favorite TV Show:
There are a lot of TV shows that I love, but my favorite of all time is “Friends.” I remember when I was in middle school and all my friends would recall the last night’s episode of “Friends.”

Best Movie I’ve Ever Seen:
Not fair! I have a long list. My favorite movie to watch over and over is “Titanic.” I love it because it was based on a true story. I personally think they did a great job making the film. However, my second top favorite movie is “Night an the Museum 2.” Know why? Ha ha! History.

Favorite Get-Away Spot:
My favorite Get-Away Spot is San Antonio, Texas. There’s a lot of history to revisit especially The Alamo—it’s my favorite place to relax. Remember The Alamo. Plus in San Antonio there’s always something exciting to do. I personally enjoy going to historical sites or museums. They also have Sea World.

If I Could Say One Thing to Future USM Students,
What Would It Be?

Take education very seriously and try to plan ahead. I was once a high school student and know that I didn’t challenge myself to get A’s. I learn from my mistakes and I wish I could have someone telling me that grades do matter. I am the first one in my family to graduate from high school and attend college. University of Saint Mary is a great college for students to continue their education. When I came to USM, I didn’t know anybody and within a day I made friends that I’m still close with today. So consider USM as your new home because everyone will be very friendly.
