So it his roughly been two months since my last blog entry. If that isn’t a testament to how much time 18 hours of classes and playing college football take up, I don’t know what is.

Let me catch you up. Football season this year has been rough. We started a whole bunch of talented freshman (I think around 13 or so) and the wins weren’t exactly piling up. But I can say with a few days of football left (we play Tabor on Saturday), those freshman have grown up a lot and the team is finally coming together.

I think the best moment thus far was when we beat nationally-ranked Friends University 38-35 here at home. It was one of the best moments of my college football career.

Anyways, today is the last time in my life that I will have a full-padded practice. It is a little sad when I think about it, but overall I am excited to be coming to the end of my football playing days. I know that after this last game, my focus will shift and fully be on school and gearing up for final projects/exams.

About a week ago, school actually started. It can be a little hectic at the beginning because you are getting used to your new class schedule and figuring out when you are in class, when you can eat lunch, when you have football meetings, when you can watch film on your opponent.

Being an athlete and living off campus only intensifies this. I am constantly looking at the clock, managing/budgeting my time, making sure I have all my football stuff ready for the day and making sure I have enough gas in my truck to get to and from campus.

But I can promise you that it is a little easier when you are a freshman because you are on campus and it eliminates those little tasks like wondering if you are going to eat lunch today/tonight/this week (ha ha).

If I could recommend one thing to incoming freshman, it would be to go easy on yourself the first semester with classes; don’t load up on classes until you know how you are going to react to being in college. If you feel like you can handle more, then take more classes the next semester or utilize the college student’s best asset: summer school classes (I love these things. They made my semester hours so much lighter over my tenure at USM).

Well, I got to run again, football practice is going to start in about an hour and I have to make sure all my equipment is ready to go.

Here we go again…and so starts another year of college and along with that, my last season of football.

I arrived back in Leavenworth a few weeks ago (before classes started) to get ready for the football season. We had our first team meeting on a Monday, and the next morning at 9 a.m., we were on the field for our first practice kicking off two-a-days.

Over the next week, we were put through some pretty tough practices but nothing too bad. It felt good to be back out on the field, running and hitting again, practicing with all the other guys. We are all one big family. Sometimes, we are dysfunctional, but a family nevertheless.

I play linebacker on our defense, which if I may say so, is legit. You know when you get hit by a Spire, because frankly, it will hurt (ha ha). All around though, the team looks pretty good this year. A lot of the guys are younger, but very talented and they will only get better as the season goes along and as they become sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
