USM Netbook Program |
| |
The University of Saint Mary will issue Netbooks to its freshmen class in the Fall of 2010. If you participate in the netbook program you will be allowed to keep your netbook over the Christmas break if you register for at least 12 semester credit hours and pay $500 down towards your tuition for the Spring semester. If you do not keep your netbook over the semester break, Information Services will store it and re-issue the same netbook to you at the beginning of the new semester. After two semesters the netbook is yours to keep.
The university will provide maintenance for the netbook during its one year warranty period. Afterwards the student should consider purchasing an extended warranty from Dell.
Transfer Students
Full-time transfer students can buy into the netbook program for $480. Once you buy into the program the netbook is your responsibility and you are not required to come in for inventory and check-in. USM can help you with software problems as long as you are a student and USM will help you with hardware problems during the initial warranty period.
Netbook Distribution
Student Life will schedule students for netbook distribution and an orientation to the USM campus technology. Students must bring the following documents to the distribution session:
- USM ID card
- Printed copy of class schedule
- Upperclassmen buying into the program must bring a receipt from the business office

Mandatory Inventory / Check In
Near the end of each of your first two semesters you must bring your netbook to Information Services for inventory. If you have registered for the next semester and have a $500 credit towards tuition you can keep your netbook over the Christmas break and will not have to come to check-in. At check-in, USM will check the serial numbers against our inventory to verify that you still have the same netbook that was issued to you during netbook distribution. We will store your netbook as is over the break.
At the end of the Spring semester you will need to bring your laptop in for inventory one last time. After that inventory we will transfer ownership to you and it is yours to keep. You may want to contact Dell and extend your warranty.
You will be notified about the inventory and check-in schedule through your USM email account and announcements on eSpire. USM will charge your account $500 should you fail to inventory/check in your netbook as scheduled.
Stolen or Missing Equipment
In the event that your netbook is stolen or missing please notify Security at x6446 and Information Services at x6420. You will need to complete a security report and provide a copy to Information Services.
If you are off campus when you discover that your netbook is missing you should to notify the local police. If the netbook is stolen along with other items as the result of a break-in or auto theft the netbook must be included as one of the items on the police report. Inform Campus Security and Information Services and provide both departments with a copy of the local police report.
Your account will be charged up to $500 for a lost or stolen netbook.
