NEW Post-9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Programs

How to get started

There are several links on this site that give details about these two programs, but the most Frequently Asked Question is "what is my first step?" or "how do I get started?"
While not all-inclusive, the six steps below are intended to help you get the process underway:

Step One: Am I eligible?
If you served in the military after September 10, 2001, the answer is Yes. Proceed to Step Two.

Step Two: Am I eligible for my 100% Maximum Benefit?
If the answer is YES to one of the two requirements below proceed to Step Three.

•  Served a total of 36 months of active duty service; or

•  Been discharged FOR a service-connected disability after 30 days of continuous service.

Step Three: Am I eligible for Chapter 33 Benefits?
If the answer is YES and you have your VA Certificate of Eligibility, Proceed to Step Four.

STEP FOUR: Bring, Mail, Email or Fax Your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to USM
Contact USM's Registrar at:
Mailing address: 4100 S. 4 th Street , Leavenworth , KS 66048 Fax: (913) 758- 6218
owenw@stmary.edu
Call (913) 758-6121 if you have questions.

NOTE: Your COE will indicate whether you are:
•  Eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program
•  Approved for Chapter 33
•  Qualified at the 100 percent maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements).

STEP FIVE: Your must now Register for school and complete your academic schedule.
USM has counselors and advisors to assist you.

STEP SIX: USM's Registrar then certifies your enrollment and forward your Academic Schedule to the VA.

Please note: The process is more complex than these six steps, but this information is a good starting point. If you still need assistance, do not hesitate to contact our registrar or Veterans Services Coordinator, Carlton Philpot.

USM is proud of your service and proud to serve you!
