What Is an Accelerated BSN (ABSN)?

An accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) is a fast-track nursing degree designed for students who already have college credits or a non-nursing bachelor’s degree. These programs allow you to earn a BSN in as little as 12–18 months and prepare you to become a registered nurse (RN).

Unlike traditional BSN programs, which take four years, accelerated programs focus only on nursing coursework and clinical training.

How an Accelerated BSN Works

Accelerated BSN programs compress two years of nursing education into a shorter, intensive format. At the University of Saint Mary, students can complete the program in as few as 12 months through a hybrid format that includes:

  • Online or Hybrid coursework
  • In-person clinical rotations
  • Hands-on lab and simulation training

Students complete more than 700 hours of clinical experience to prepare for real-world patient care.

Many BSN programs, like USM's, are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), ensuring quality and rigor.
